Deer
I would really like to get some information about what I can use from, for example, a deer when my husband has been hunting. What should I set aside for the dog? Which bones can I use, and what offal should I bring home? I’m a bit worried about giving something harmful or overfeeding.
- So glad you asked – and it's very understandable to be unsure 💛 You can safely use the following parts of the deer: Lean muscle meat (thigh, shoulder, neck, trimmings without many tendons) – this is the safest and most important part. Heart – considered muscle, not a "classic" organ, and very good to use. Liver – very nutritious, but should be used in small amounts (think supplement, not main ingredient). Kidney and spleen – can be used, but again in small amounts. Offal/organs in general: Offal is a powerful food. A good rule of thumb is that organs should not make up more than about 5–10% of the diet, and liver should only be a part of this. This is often where people become uncertain – and with good reason.
