Probiotics

I give my dog a good tablespoon of thick milk from Rørosmeieriet mixed with water every morning. I mainly do this to get him to drink more, but I wonder if it might also provide some beneficial probiotics? As it’s only a small amount, I don’t think the lactose is a problem?

  • Hi Mette 🙂 That’s a very interesting question, which is difficult to answer as the amount of probiotics varies from product to product. Biola, for example, contains added bacterial cultures, which means it can be considered to have a probiotic effect. So it’s important to be aware that even if a product is fermented, that doesn’t necessarily mean it contains probiotics. So perhaps you could check with Rørosmeieriet to see if they have any information on this? As for lactose, whether dogs can tolerate it varies greatly from dog to dog. Puppies produce large amounts of the enzyme lactase, which can break down lactose. However, this enzyme gradually diminishes in puppies as they are weaned off their mother’s milk.
