Which meats
Hi! I’m thinking of trying an elimination diet on Pippi as she’s constantly scratching her ears. She doesn’t scratch her body that much otherwise, but she does so now and then. My problem is choosing. Pippi has tasted almost everything imaginable, both meat and vegetables. She’s only tasted elk liver, so I was wondering if I should start with that, but she’s eaten quite a bit of sweet potato. When I introduce different things, should I start with the things she’s eaten the least of? Not straight onto salmon and chicken?
- Hi! Yes, you should start with what she’s eaten the least of. I reckon elk will be fine. If she’s eaten quite a bit of sweet potato, you can swap the sweet potato for another source of carbohydrates she hasn’t eaten before, such as tapioca, pasta, ordinary potatoes, or something else she hasn’t eaten. That’s exactly how you do it “by the book” 😊 Yes, it’s a good idea to start with something you think she can tolerate. E.g. lamb or pork, and save the ones you suspect might be problematic for the end. I’ve written more about this here: {{ARTICLE:the-detective-work-guide-solving-your-dogs-food-allergies:GUIDE: Elimination diet}} Regarding the ears, I know many people are happy with this oil: Mullein Garlic Oil t="link-mid"/>https://www.amazon.com/Herb-Pharm-Mullein-Garlic-Herbal/dp/B001E8DB…
- Great! Thanks! I used Muellin Garlic on her for a while, but the ear problem just got worse, so I had to get help. Have you read any articles about the types of fungus they get in their ears? I thought it would be interesting to find out more about it because I came across an article claiming that the type of fungus she had also grows in oil. That made me a bit interested in understanding more about this.
- I’ve read a bit about different types in the book “The Herbal Dog” by Rita Hogan. There’s loads of interesting stuff in there! It strikes me that it might be a good idea to write an article for the knowledge library on this, so I’ll add it to the list 🤓
- How lovely of you to say so. I’ll have a read through it then. I got hold of it on your advice earlier :) And brilliant to have an article! I’m devouring every bit of information I can get my hands on :)
