Recipe
Hi. I’ve talked about my dog Varg before. We started with a raw diet a couple of weeks before Easter. He’s always been fed raw food. When I got him at 16 weeks old, I started with Mush puppy and vom puppy. He had a bit of loose stools at times, which improved when I added carrots. Suddenly he wouldn’t eat any more and I had to throw away a lot of food. I thought it was fine to make his food myself, and did the same for my other dog because of IBD. But I didn’t think about it when I started and gave him too much oil to begin with. This led to an upset stomach. Now I’ve gradually increased the amounts—up to 5 g of Dr Baddaky and 9 g of wheat germ oil—but that’s as far as I can go; his stomach can’t handle any more than that. I’ve still got 1.5 g of fish oil and 4 g of wheat germ oil left to make up the correct dose. He is, after all, a growing puppy, so I want him to get what he needs. What should I do now? Do I have to stop this recipe, or can I add something else? Does he need more fat, or is this enough? Do I have to go back to ready-made raw food? I’m getting a bit panicked, as I have recent experience with IBD. What should I do?
- Hi! This isn’t a crisis, and it doesn’t mean Varg is developing IBD. His stomach is simply showing where the limit lies right now. You don’t need to give him the maximum dose of oil for him to feel well. Stick to the amount he can tolerate, and keep an eye on his condition, weight, energy levels, coat and stools. If he loses weight, increase the meat/food quantity slightly rather than adding more oil. That way, his overall requirement for essential fatty acids and vitamin E will be met 😊 You also don’t need to think you have to choose between a homemade recipe or ready-made raw food. If he has previously been fed MUSH puppy or Vom puppy, you’re welcome to use it from time to time — for example, a few meals a week, or as a break on days when you don’t want to prepare everything yourself.…
