A controlled study published in the Australian Veterinary Journal investigated the effect of daily chewing of raw beef bones on dental calculus in dogs. All dogs had existing tartar at baseline. Results showed: - 35.5% reduction in tartar after 3 days of chewing - 81.6% reduction after 12 days - 87.8% reduction after 20 days The reduction occurred because of the mechanical scraping effect of chewing raw bones — not due to any chemical agent. Potential risks include: - Choking - Tooth fractures - Constipation if given too often - Individual variation in chewing behavior To reduce risk: - Never feed cooked bones - Choose bones from younger animals (lamb, veal, poultry) — they are softer and more flexible - Introduce slowly - Choose appropriate sizes for YOUR dog - Always supervise your dog Chalky white stool = too much bone Some dogs should not receive bones: - Dogs with severe dental damage - Dogs missing many teeth - Dogs that crush bones excessively
How Often Can You Feed Raw Bones?
As part of a properly balanced raw diet: daily. As a preventive dental measure: 3–4 times per week. Puppies can receive chew bones from around 8 weeks of age, in moderate amounts due to calcium regulation.
