How Often Should I Feed?
New research suggests once-daily feeding may benefit adult dogs - but is it right for your dog? Explore the science and practical considerations.
The Once-Daily Finding
A large observational study from the Dog Aging Project, published in GeroScience (2022), suggests that dogs fed once a day may have better health than those fed more frequently. The study included data from over 24,000 dogs, and researchers found a lower incidence of, among other things, cognitive decline, gastrointestinal disorders, dental disease, joint issues, and liver and kidney disease in dogs that received only one daily meal. This finding has sparked considerable interest among dog owners wondering if they should change their feeding routine.
About the Study
This is an observational study – it shows associations, not causation. Although the association remains robust after adjusting for several factors, the findings may partly be explained by residual confounding – that is, unobserved differences between dogs and owners that also affect health outcomes.
Correlation vs. Causation
Before making any changes to your dog's feeding schedule, it's crucial to understand what this study can and cannot tell us. Because this was an observational study, we cannot conclude that once-daily feeding *causes* better health outcomes. The researchers observed an association, but owners who feed once daily may differ from other owners in ways that independently affect their dogs' health. Let’s suppose that owners who feed only once per day are also more likely to: - Be more focused on overall health - Walk more and provide more exercise - Use less processed food - Avoid overfeeding and keep their dog lean Each of these factors can independently improve a dog’s health and thus be mistaken for the actual effect of “feeding frequency.” This is the challenge in observational studies – one cannot control for all possible confounding factors, even when adjusting for age, breed, and neuter status. Still, the study invites fresh thinking about how often we should feed healthy adult dogs, and whether longer fasting periods might offer health benefits – as research also suggests in humans. When NOT to Try Once-Daily Feeding
⚠️ Once-daily feeding is **not recommended** for: - **Puppies** - growing dogs need frequent meals for proper development - **Senior dogs** - older dogs often do better with smaller, more frequent meals - **Underweight dogs** - they may need more opportunities to eat - **Dogs with diabetes** - require careful meal timing with medication - **Dogs with gastrointestinal issues** - may need smaller, more frequent meals - **Dogs prone to bloat (GDV)** - larger meals may increase risk - **Any dog with a medical condition** - consult your vet first
